Honesty, Respect, Compassion,
Courage and Service
Chillion Sanerivi is of Samoan descent and grew up in Wellington.
What lead you to working at The Cause Collective?
I worked at Otara Youth Service which exposed me to youth work and a lot of our amazing youth services in the community. Then I moved on to Alliance Health Plus (PHO) to a team focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Pasifika communities.
Who inspires you and why?
My mum, who is no longer with us, has inspired me with her strength, her tenacity and resilience. I’ve always said she was an unqualified social worker who understood the system and did her best to help families who moved to New Zealand from the Pacific. She gave away what she could from our home to help many families set up home.
My cousin Sina is my other inspiration as she loved young people. She had a particular way in making them feel safe. I consider her as an unqualified youth worker who had compassion and heart in her practice.
What is your current role?
I am the Youth Innovation Lead. I mobilise young people in leading change in South Auckland through Do Good, Feel Good.
What initiatives are you currently working on and what impact do they have on the community?
Our activations right across the movement is about ensuring young peoples’ voices are designing solutions on what they are most passionate about. The impact of this would be social connection, and social cohesion is enhanced and fostered with young people taking ownership of social responsibilities in their communities.
What is your vision for health and wellbeing in South Auckland?
An increased sense of belonging that improves wellbeing.
What is one funny/quirky/interesting thing that no-one knows about you?
I love the Marvel & DC universe.
Who is your favourite Superhero and why?
Doctor Strange – he protects peoples’ realities by combatting enemies in the unknown realms the natural eye can’t see. People go about their lives without knowing.
What is your super power?
Creativity – I see everything in colours, patterns, rhythms, beats to find a common harmony.
